Why Museum Glass?

You’ve picked out the perfect frame, just the right mat, and now your sales clerk has asked the unexpected question: Are you familiar with the different types of glass we offer? Although it may initially seem as a simple enough answer– anything which can protect your photo, artwork, or valuable heirloom piece– each variety of glass has its own advantages and drawbacks. Based upon the specifics of your piece and individual needs, our team can help select the right choice for you. Before you visit us in person, though, this blog post will clarify the protective and glare resistant features of the products we offer.

Thompson’s Frame & Gallery is proud to offer a full line of products from the industry leader Tru Vue, including Conservation Clear, Museum Glass, and others.

Conservation Clear

Pros

  • UV Protection: Unlike typical commercial glass, Conservation Clear has a specially designed coating applied to its surface which blocks 99% of UV rays. This is crucial for protecting your valuable pieces, as exposure to UV over time can damage the integrity of the work by fading or yellowing the colors.

Cons

  • Glare: Just like regular glass, Conservation Clear will catch any and all glare and reflection. This can especially be a visual detriment when the piece is placed near a strong light source, such as a window or an overhead light.

Museum

Pros

  • Anti-Glare: Museum Glass has all of the protective benefits of Conservation Clear without any compromise to visual quality, making it the superior choice in all instances. Its specially designed coating eliminates nearly all reflection, making it practically invisible. This optimal light transmission allows for the fine detail and vivid colors of your artwork to truly shine.

  • Special Project Use: This type of glass is ideal for any piece with depth in the frame, such as shadowboxes and top mounts. As the depth of the piece increases, so does the degree of glare. Museum glass solves this problem.

Cons:

  • Due to its superior quality and uniquely engineered coating, Museum Glass carries a higher price point.

Other:

Thompson’s Frame & Gallery also carries a variety of other types of glass to suit the individual needs of your piece. For instance, in the case of oversized pieces (exceeding 40” x 60”) Plexiglass can be a beneficial option due to being more lightweight. In any instance, our sales clerks will always be happy to discuss these options with you.
